My sister has made her way through college money-wise by nannying. (Great paying college job, by the way!) When I went to do her resume recently for a nursing internship at a local hospital, she wasn’t sure how her nannying experience was related to the duties she would be performing in the hospital setting. My response: EVERYTHING!
Of course, she was caring for a human being, which is at the core of nursing. But more importantly, you have to be a very reliable and RESPONSIBLE person to be a nanny–especially for an 8 month old. I emphasized these character traits on her resume.
The reason I bring up her story is because everyone, especially college students and recent graduates, has had that job they told people wasn’t a “real job.” The fact of the matter is that these are the jobs where you develop some of the most essential character attributes that can help in ANY job! Don’t delete them off your resume until you have at least 3 jobs in the field of the “real job” that you want.

Great article. After looking at it a bit more, I now understand how my experience directly relates to nursing greatly after having to change diapers, clean up spit up and give sophie her baths each day!! =)
